The mysterious honey by Alpine bees and aphids

Most of people have always thought that honeys are made only from blossoms.

Let us tell you a different story of honey that comes from insects in high Alpine forests of Northern Italy.

Melata d'Bosco and d'Abete honey are one of the rarest and most complex honeys produced. Bees produce special honey once a year within 45 days.

Melata d’Abete and Melata d'Bosco are magical honeys categorized under 'Melata di miele', which means honey made from secretion of different aphids.

Bees produce this honey in symbiosis with aphids that live on the Alpine trees such as linden, fir and oak feeding on the sap therein (Cinara costate, C. piceae, Physokermes hemicryphus.)

The unique honey is made by bees that collect a special nectar secretion produced by aphids. Bees use aphids as their herd in order to obtain raw material for their honey. It has been argued that bees even defend aphids and take care of them, like a decent cattle should be.

One of the rarest honeys on our planet

Melata d’Abete and Melata d'Bosco are one of the rarest honeys on this planet. The bees live in extreme conditions in high Alps around the year. The bee-hives are situated in protected Natural Park of Marguareis, on altitude of 1800-2600m. It is the area ”in the middle of nowhere” with an untouched pure nature, a wild paradise - a home for rich and unique Alpine flora and fauna.

The production time is from July to Sptember which is the 'high season' for insects. Production depends always on weather. If it’s too cold and rainy, there are no aphids and no honey. Last year ( 2017 ) the production was only 50kg.

The production area and honey itself has Bio certification. The land is free from pesticides, glyphosate etc. The honey is 100% pure and raw without any additives. Bees are free of antibiotics and any chemicals. Additional supplements such as white sugar are never given for bees.

The most healthiest and richest honeys ever

The honeydew honey remains liquid for a long time, it is very sticky and rarely crystallizes completely. The color varies from dark amber to almost black, sometimes with greenish hues. Smell and taste is of medium intensity, and the taste is slightly sweet and persistent.

Meleta honey is told to be the most healthiest and richest honeys ever.

Since Melata d'Abete and Melata d'Bosco have strong antiseptic properties, it was used in history for sterilizing the wounds and equipments.

Today, there are doctors who recommend Melata honey for curing the lung infections, coughing and sore throat, instead of using pharmacy medicines.

Melata honeys contains oligosaccharides (complex sugars), which will help to grow the beneficial bacteria in the intestine and thereby help to maintain a strong intestinal flora and hence resistance.

These honeys are also known as "sports honeys" in Italy, because it is an excellent source of natural minerals and trace elements. It contains manganese, potassium and magnesium, amino acids, proteins, organic acids, mineral salts (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium), and other essential micronutrients.
